One of the most vibrant features of the Android OS is the variety of the apps it supports. Defenitely, its something that can enthrall any Android user. From where can I get these apps?- this would be the next quetion- I know that. :)

Well, like any other market- Android apps are sold at Android App Market. This place provides you with thousands and thousands of Android apps to choose from.

To buy an app...
First of to buy apps, we need to start at the Android Market on your android enabled device. Using either the computer or your smartphone would be more than enough to get into this Marketplace. But to purchase the apps from the market, you need your mobilephone- cmoputers are not allowed. No if you think you can dowload to your computer then move to the phone, forget it- you can't do it; all downloads are to your Android enabled phone directly.

Now I would like to introduce you to two tabs. One is 'Top Paid' and another one is 'Top Free'. This is not much of a thing- just to show some statistical data related to app downloads. You can use these tabs to see most popular apps and which ones have the most demands. :)

Now all you want to do is to point the web browser of your Android enabled phone to the foresaid Android Market; then go ahead and browse the app you want. After accepting various prompts that pops up, start the download.

Paying for an Android app.

That's a wonderful question- I had the same in me too.
Paying for the stuff you download is not as tough as you might imagine. All it takes is a Google Checkout account.

To pay, create a Google Checkout account- if you don't have one. You can do this using your Google email account. If you have a computer, I recommend to set that up first- even before browsing for the apps. Once you start downloading the apps, you will get billed for the purchase. Billing is via Credeit cards- of course!

NOTE One thing I would like to remind you is about the 'Paid App Availability'. This feature is to be checked if you are a resident living outside the US. It lists out the names of all the countries that can carry out feasible transactions in the market. This makes use of the Currency conversion tool also. If your country is not there- you can't purchase the app for the time being- but don't worry- more and more countries are added to the list often.

There are two types of Gmail accounts that can be added to your Android. These are Primary account and secondary account(s). The first Gmail account that you add to your Android device is the primary Gmail account and can only be removed by completely resetting the device.

If your Android is internet-based then it uses Gmail accounts to sync various personal activities and details like mail, contacts and calendars. It is also used to download applications from the Android market. By going into the device's settings menu, you would be able to add more than one google accounts.

Instructions
1. Access the "Menu" on your Android device's home screen, then tap on to access the "Settings."
2. Go to "Accounts & sync"; then continue to the "Add account". You'll find the button at the bottom of the screen.
3. Go to "Google" to add a new Gmail account. Tap "Next"; then "Sign in." Enter the desire login information for the primary Gmail account, and tap "Sign in."
4. Now select the option "Finish setup". Next, tap the "Add Account" button to set up another Gmail account. Continue adding accounts until you have set up all of the accounts you want to sync with your Android device.

Application security:
Android devices can run applications written by third-party developers and distributed through the Android Market or one of several other application stores. Once they have signed up, developers can make their applications available immediately, without a lengthy approval process.

When an application is installed, the Android Market displays all required permissions. The user can then decide whether to install the application based on those permissions. The user may decide not to install an application whose permission requirements seem excessive or unnecessary. A game may need to enable vibration, for example, but should not need to read messages or access the phonebook.

Possible app permissions include functionality like:
-Accessing the Internet
-Making phone calls
-Sending SMS messages
-Reading and writing to the installed memory card
-Accessing a user's address book data


Security software companies have been developing applications to help ensure the security of Android devices. SMobile Systems, one such manufacturer, claims that 20% of apps in the Android Market request permissions that could be used for malicious purposes, and 5% of apps can make phone calls without the user's intervention. This is not a claim that the apps are actually malicious, but rather that the potential for malicious activity exists.

Earlier only iPhones were thought to have the heritage to sync with Mac- but now with Android, one can easily sync with Mac. Various areas where Android can sync with Mac is:
*iCal
*Address Book
*iTunes,etc.


What does this mean?
You can grab all your songs, pictures, album art, podcasts, calendar dates, address book, and more into your Android. Cool, right?

Earlier, there was an intense dependancy on 'MobileME' which did the jobs. Now it's no longer needed. Throw it with junk- becvause now your iCal is synced with Android. Add any new information to iCall and wait for it to be synced with your Android cell phone, and its automatic! Nice one, right?


Instructions

1. First and foremost, you need you device to get recoganised with Mac. It's simple- just press the menu button on your Android and go to Settings screen.
Now that you are in the settings area, press Applications>Development>USB Debugging. This should swtich on the USB Debugging.

2. To get your Android device to sync with iTunes, you will require a simple program called Salling Media Sync onto your Mac. It's available free-of-cost.

Once this software- Salling media is installed, it will open and give you some steps that wil help you sync. Just follow the steps, and iTunes will be syncing with Android in minutes. Don't forget that you can use iTunes not only to sync music but also to sync other stuff like pictures, and podcasts from your Mac to Android and vice versa.

3. Your Address book can be easily synced with Mac. This is because Android is a Google based system. Any changes made in the Google contacts with your Mac gets automatically synced with that of your Android. To set this up first go to the address book of the Android. Then click that following path:
Address Book>Preferences>Synchronize With Google.
Once you turn this feature on, click the Google button and sign in to the account.


4. Making your iCal synced with Android requires some extra steps. Just like the Address Book, we have to use Google to sync iCal also. For this Google has an elaborate article(CalDAV: CalDAV Calendar Sync) in it's Help section.

What is an API Index?

Android is a software stack for mobile devices that includes an operating system, middleware and key applications. Google Inc. purchased the initial developer of the software, Android Inc., in 2005. Android has a large community of developers writing applications ("apps") that extend the functionality of the devices. There are currently over 200,000 apps available for Android. Android Market is the online app store run by Google, though apps can also be downloaded from third-party sites. Developers write primarily in the Java language, controlling the device via Google-developed Java libraries.

The unveiling of the Android distribution on 5 November 2007 was announced with the founding of the Open Handset Alliance, a consortium of 80 hardware, software, and telecom companies devoted to advancing open standards for mobile devices. Google released most of the Android code under the Apache License, a free software and open source license.

The Android open-source software stack consists of Java applications running on a Java-based, object-oriented application framework on top of Java core libraries running on a Dalvik virtual machine featuring JIT compilation.
